Today I went to spend the afternoon in the archives of The Lady magazine. You can read the history of The Lady, and discover that it was started in 1885. The archives are in the basement of the offices in Bedford Street, and are certainly dusty!
Here I am posing next to the shelves where all of the bound annuals are stored. There is also a second dusty room that has ten copies of every edition every printed, all just bagged up. Astounding.
It was hard to know where to start!
I sat with my camera, and tried to get a snapshot of the different decades. I looked at editions from 1902, the 1920s, the 1940s, the 1950s, as well as the year I was born!
I will be posting some of the pictures I took, mainly focused on the adverts (which reflect society so effectively!) and fashion pictures.
It was dirty work but someone has to do it!
In additon to all of the magazines, they also have all of the accounting books from the 1890s onward.
