Beauty Bloggers - Why We Fell In Love With Make-Up

I love how make-up can bond a group of women, and the power that putting your face on in the morning has. I wanted to explore our relationship with make-up a little more, and thought I should turn to the ladies who love make-up the most - Beauty Bloggers!

Beauty Blogger 13: The Beauty Blog With No Name

Can you tell us a bit about your relationship with make-up?

Unfortunately I cannot claim to have played with my mother’s make-up – in fact, when I lived in the Middle East for a little while as a child, it was in a country where cosmetics had been banned! Fortunately for me, my mother was (and still is) very glamorous and so I had some sort of figure to look up to – even if she didn’t let me touch the stuff until I was well into my teens. I’m still playing around with it… and I’m sure if I was 70 and typing this, I’d still say that I was experimenting and learning.

Do you have a staple make up look?

My staple look has to be thick black eyeliner with a lipstick so bright that it probably makes your eyes bleed. I can be quite gaudy.

Why do you love make-up?

Without wanting to sound too pretentious, I love the art of self-expression and deciding what you want to look like for that day. I love that it gives some people greater confidence; I love that certain styles of make-up defines different eras; I love the fact that there is so much of it! I consider it to be an accessory, and love the process of putting on it. Some days I’ll feel like wearing make-up that is extremely subtle, and other days I’ll put on big lashes and black lipstick. I like having that choice.

Is there anything you haven't quite perfected with your make up routine yet?

The only thing that really bothers me is eye-make up and eyeshadows, only because I have an odd eye shape. It’s somewhere inbetween being hooded and… not. I’m still figuring it out.

Describe your blog:

My blog features reviews and looks that I am wearing, injected with a little bit of humour, a bit of ranting (read: a lot) and features all the products that I adore. I like to experiment and document what products I like, and often find it useful to look back on old photos and see what I used. I’m not one for ‘hauls’ as such.

Are there any blogs that give you inspiration?

I don’t really draw inspiration from other make-up bloggers (still love you guys) but I absolutely adore and recommend The Beauty Investigator and My Vintage Vogue. Both are a delight for the eyes and where I sometimes draw inspiration from. The last time I had an ‘inspired’ moment featured feathers, a 1970s maxi and lips the same shade as aubergines… my little brother asked if I was dressing up as a peacock… He clearly didn't get it.

What do you like about blogging?

I find myself writing constantly. I did a law degree, worked in broadcasting, and now I’m a Masters student – all of which involve fingers of steel. Sometimes it’s nice to break away from all of that and write about something you enjoy, even if it won't change the world. So, in a nutshell, I essentially write about make-up for myself and the crumbs of sanity I have left. Without obviously sounding too insane.

1. Can you tell us a bit about your relationship with make-up?

My relationship with makeup started when I watched my older cousins wearing it and also my aunties, I would often ask if they wanted to practise on me. I learned to wear makeup from them as my mum never wore makeup.

2. Do you have a staple make up look?

Yes, my three must have makeup looks are liquid Foundation (light base), black eyeliner but not too much, and of course not forgetting my cream blusher, in a pinkish/reddish colour.

3. Why do you love make-up?

I love makeup because it changes the look of me and gives me more confidence when I go out - just adding a bit of foundation and blusher changes me, if am feeling down I would get my makeup done and it would make me feel a lot more better. Its amazing what makeup does.

4. Is there anything you haven't quite perfected with your make up routine yet?

At the minute I am struggling to get my eye shadow right, as I like adding different colours to one eye but this doesn’t always turn out the way I would like it to. My other struggle is definitely my eyebrows as I am not to sure what shape suits my face and the best way to contour them. I usually manage to get one eyebrow the way I would like it but can never get the other one right!

5. Describe your blog:

My blog is for girly girls who love makeup, hair and clothes. On my blog you will find different things about makeup and hair. I post outfits to showwhat I wore some days. I also post pictures of my makeup. You will also find on my blog different things I have tried out and designs I have done on my nails.

6. Are there any blogs that give you inspiration?

I wouldn’t say I have a particular blog that is an inspiration but I do read some blogs and some of them are really good, they are very similar to what I like, which is good for me. I love reading blogs especially if the person is similar to me.

7. What do you like about blogging?

I like blogging because its fun to do! Some people might not find it fun but I do. I also like blogging because when I write about something I know I am helping another person maybe if I do a review someone will read it and find it very helpful. That makes me feel good, knowing that I’ve helped someone.

8. Why did you start?

I started blogging because I knew in my head it was going to be fun and it would help others, another reason why I started would be because a girl on my twitter had a blog and I read it and it was good, I talked to her about me doing one, then I just decided yeah why not and made one up. Firstly I was thinking oh goodness I have no followers and no idea how to design it...what’s the point in doing this but I stayed strong and said to myself I'll get some and I did, I am proud of myself!

Can you tell us a bit about your relationship with make-up?

I love makeup but am slightly less interested in wearing it than I am collecting it.

Can you describe it? My makeup look is very simple. I use pan stick most of the time as I like a nice even base (during the summer I mix this in with some moisturiser to form a tint), I line my eyes with a brown liquid eyeliner, use a dark brown for my mascara and I always wear lipstick – mostly red, but other times a pinky colour. I always have my nails painted and like to match my nails to my lipstick colour.

Why do you love make-up? I love that makeup is such a controversial subject and, at various times, throughout the centuries has been subject to very heavy handed control. I love the fact that the Suffragettes embraced lipstick as an emblem cause and I love that practically every civilisation since time began has worn some form of body and/or face colouring. I do not love the fact that despite all of this make up is far too often considered to be a vacuous topic and not worth serious thought.

Why did you start blogging? I started blogging in around June 2011 after very subtle suggestions from a couple of other bloggers. It really started after a conversation with ReeRee and I realised that people were interested in the topic. From this I am now working with two other Norwich based bloggers – Missy Vintage and Retro Chick – and we are taking our love of makeup, fashion and style to vintage fairs as well as holding workshops and parties to show how achievable vintage glamour is – with a little practice. We set up The Historical Sauces in October and it has already been a great success.

Describe your blog: My blog focuses really on cosmetic collectables and will either be a theme – say The History of Eyebrows – or focusing on one specific product – my latest post was on false eyelashes for instance. I also plan to develop reviews on products that are have been around for a long time and are still available or new products that help achieve the vintage look.

Beauty Blogger 10: Lorraine from John, It's Only Make-up!

Can you tell us a bit about your relationship with make-up?

It's all love! I started wearing make-up when I was about nine years old. When I say wearing, I mean smearing some of my mam's orange foundation over my cheeks. Just the cheeks. When I started secondary school, I was introduced to liquid eye-liner. My affinity for it lasted for most of my school years and manifested in black circles that surrounded my eyes, sometimes extended to my cheekbones. I hated school so found it really calming to do my make-up in the mornings, concentrating on it was a great distraction. I still find that putting my face on helps me de-stress.

Have you developed a staple look?

Not really, I'm very fickle. If anything, it's vintage inspired. I like my brows and eye-liner to be quite thick, other than that it can vary.

Why do you love make-up?

As I said, it's a distraction from more stressful things. I really like to wind down my practising different looks or organising my collection. It's a form of escape, applying it and reading about it online. It's nice to be able to help a friend out too, by dolling them up for an occasion. I'm always so thrilled when they like it. Also, the obvious bonus of it making me look a touch less horrendous than I do bare-faced.

Why did you start blogging?

I just really enjoy writing and discussing cosmetics. I thought - what's the harm? I knew I'd the option to delete it if anything went wrong. That other people are willing to read what I write is such a confidence booster for me, so I've kept it up.

Describe your blog:

It mainly consists of in-depth product reviews, both positive and negative. I post a weekly summary that just lists and describes things that have been on my mind since the last post, in as funny a way as I can manage. I love music too, so I include playlists from time to time. I set out to have quite a serious style of blogging but people started saying that my blog was very light-hearted and put them in good form so I just go with the flow now.
