I have been so busy with the salon, I haven't had much down time. To relax my mind a little, I decided to attempt to make Ellington his first bandana. It's a simple job, but not quite as simple as just tying a bandana around him!

I wanted the tie to be velcro or popper based, so that if it did get caught ever, it would just pop open, rather than a fixed knot. I also needed a button hole on the top so that the clasp for his lead can stick through. I don't have my sewing machine so it was a hand stitch job!

1. I double checked how long it had to be so that it would fit around his neck. I wanted it pretty loose, so that it wouldn't bother him.

2. I sewed in the hem, and then sewed on the two sections of the popper. At this point I double checked it fit!

3. I then needed to create the button hole. I felt where it would need to be, and made a small nick. I cut the slit, and then started the fliddly job of handstitching around the hole. I needed it to be well sewn, otherwise the fabric will just fray with use.

4. I double checked it all fit.....woohoo!

It is very hard to get a picture, as he can get pretty needy, and comes way too close to me all of the time! So I took a few so you could get the idea!

Yesterday was a Wonderful Women meeting at the salon, and as I had my laptop we posed for a silly photo as we waited for everyone else to arrive!

The meeting was a chance for a catch up (and everyone seemed to have done loads recently!). We had new trademarks registered, events coming up, new logos and business cards being planned, and new milestones passed.

We then had an activity based on reflecting on our own positive skills, talents and qualities, as well as telling each other what we thought each other's awesome things were. I think sometimes we are our own worst critics, and we forget to remember how far we have come, and how fabulous we really are.

I haven't had my Outfit posts up for a few days as my camera has been at the salon, but my tripod was at home. I took this quick one, just to show a new top I wore. I actually got it for christmas, but haven't worn i!

It has squirrels on it, and has a round neckline. It isn't anything I would have ever bought for myself, but actually I really liked wearing it. It's nice to come out of our comfort zones sometimes!

I have now taken the tripod to Rockalily Cuts, so Rockalily Style posts will now be taken there......rather than at home. Oooh....change is always exciting.

Rockabilly Hairdressers in London

So, after a week of being up and running, I thought I would blog about how it feels now I own a rockabilly hairdressers in London town!

Getting the salon ready felt a little overwhelming at times, but now that I can reflect back on it, I can appreciate that I got it done in a pretty good time! It took about 5 weeks, with the Rockette family pulling together and giving it some elbow grease.

From mood boards, to paint shopping, to digging through furniture shops and vintage hide aways, the salon began to take shape. What I do find pretty cool is that when I hold the two mood boards up, I have pretty much stuck to them! They are an actual reflection on what has been created. Mood boards can sometimes sound a little wishy washy, but they really helped keep my design focus, there is so much awesome stuff out there, but not everything is suitable for the look I wanted.

Rockalily Cuts has now been open for a week, and its been so much fun! Lucie Luella and I have had the pleasure of hanging out with so many fabulous people! This week has definitely been the week for film industry clients, I wonder if our weeks will have different trends?!

Mojitos and teacakes have been our favourite things, along with Donald Draper style haircuts.

Ellington the shop dog has settled in perfectly, he loves the attention, but also enjoys creeping into his bed and having a rest. The noise doesn't bother him at all!

As ever, there is still a lot I want to do with it, but it is always a work in progress, and I'm not yet quite able to stand back and enjoy what has been achieved so far!

We have had all sorts of customers, from rockabilly greasers, vintage gents, rock 'n' roll ladies and just lovely women who fancy a touch a glamour in their day!

Thank you if you have popped in already, and if you're considering visiting, do feel free to say hello! I'm always happy to have an excuse for a coffee!

The Queen's Diamond Jubilee - Rockalily Special

We were having some pictures of the salon taken today, and of course were giving haircuts too! If you weren't around to appreciate it, it was a simply beautiful day weather wise. It meant a summer dress, but also a rather restless dog! He was quite needy today, hence my pic of him perching on me.

We were also lucky to receive a new cd to play, which came courtesy of a fabulous twitter follower. A few people have offered to make a mix for the salon, and we're very grateful for some new music to listen to. Today's offering was very cool, and we listened to it on repeat for basically all of the day.

It seems that we have many people visit for haircuts who have awesome jobs. I love a career chat! Today may have involved me sharing my sadness that I would never illustrate my own children's book.

I understand that some of us either lack the time to get our fringes trimmed, or can't find a hairdresser that will successfully cut them in the correct shape, and sometimes have to resort to cutting them ourselves. However, if you're cutting them from scratch I would always recommend finding a hairdresser to give you the correct shape to start with!

We had Shona from New Adventures in Vintage in the salon today, and impulsively she decided to get some Bettie Bangs cut in. Fabulous! My kind of lady!

I tried to take some photos yesterday, but didn't manage to get pictures of everyone who came in! But it does give a flavour of our day!

Here is Ellington, the shop dog. You can just see his aqua colour bed by my feet, where he can found chilling most of the day. He will sometimes ask to come and sit on my lap, and he rather oddly likes to sit with his feet on the desk, as if he's ready for work!

This gentleman arrived on an awesome tandem bike, and he needed his haircut rescuing. Lucie Luella worked her magic and he walked out without the hat in came in with!

Donald Draper was the inspiration for this gentleman's cut, although we did have a debate about whether he can be a role model or not! We agreed happily that his style certainly could be! I don't have a picture of the end result, but you'll have to trust me that it looks super suave!

A mohawk type haircut next! Lucie was excited to get her hands on this one!

We're loving all of the local faces that pop in to say hello, and chilling out with a cuppa and a teacake.

So, do let me know if you fancy booking an appointment, and maybe we can get your pretty face on the blog too!

So, who's got tickets to the Radio 1 Hackney Weekend? I have tickets for the Saturday, and am super excited. The line ups are pretty fabulous. As it is now a month away, I thought I'd share some of the artists I am going to do my best to see.

Of course, my number one is Ed Sheeran, who I have been obsessing over this year. He is the reason I chose Saturday over Sunday.

After meeting the guys from Hawleywood's Barbershop at Viva Las Vegas this year, I had no doubt that Rockalily Cuts would be stocking Layrite Pomade.

Developed to replace the wax that greasers would use in the SoCal rockabilly scene, water-based Layrite pomade holds like a wax, but washes out like a gel! What other pomades call extreme hold, we just call original. The same formula greasers have been trusting for 10 years.

Holds as strong as a wax

High shine for that polished look

Water-based formula washes right out just like a gel

No drying formula keeps hair soft with no flaking

Controls even the curliest and thickest hair out there

Keeps your hair in place and looking good all day

As well as being for the gents, I have been happily using Layrite on my victory rolls, for a nice hold, without stickiness, and as its waterbased, it just washes out with ease.
