Can we always create the life we want?

If you decide to start your own business, or follow a new career path, you may well start with what you love. It is a common dream to try and find a way to combine your passion with a way to pay the bills.

Now, I'm a big believer in creating the life you want, but at the same time I have a little business bugbear. This isn't aimed at any one in particular, but just a general musing.

Business works on supply and demand. You need to supply something that has a demand to make money. Now, you can find a demand that isn't currently being met, or create a new demand. A business like Starbucks created a new demand. Before they started charging us £3 for a cup of coffee (which I love by the way) there wasn't a customer demand for high-end, flavoured, or varied coffees. They created a demand which they then supplied.

Business doesn't work if you focus purely on what you want to supply. You may love it, you may work really hard at it, you may dedicate your life to it....but that doesn't mean you'll get paid for it. The world doesn't always reward those who work hardest, but those who perhaps work smartest.
