Life happens. Tough times can be random, unpredictable and accidental. It can be hard to know how to make it all better again. But you know what? Feeling low, down, sad or angry definintely won't.
Even on a small scale, if you miss your bus, spill your morning coffee and get a late fee on your credit card, being in a bad mood for the day certainly won't help happier moments shine on you.
So, when the shit hits the fan, what are some things you can do to make your day a better one?
1. Give yourself a time limit. I'm a real fan of this strategy. Feeling disappointed or sad are often valid emotions, but we don't want to give too much time to them, they get us no where. Give yourself a set amount of time to wallow, and then force yourself to switch gears. It may be 30 minutes, 3 hours, 2 days; but once the limit it up, get up, change the music, get outside etc.
2. Offload the emotion, and leave it behind. Saying it outloud to someone, or writing it down and then binning it can be surprisingly freeing. Nothing sounds as loud as words rattling around our minds unspoken.
3. Use some perspective. Even when something feels awful, when your chest feels tight and you can't see the end, in reality most of these events will soon be forgotten. In a month will you give this happening any heed? Will you even care about this next week? Have you survived much worse before, and bounced forward, long forgetting the emotional toll? Most probably.
